Ten Terrific Technorati Tips - Part 2

by Nick Dalton

Title your posts

Technorati uses tags to classify blog posts. You can see all posts related to 'attention' at technorati.com/tags/attention. Technorati uses a special syntax for tagging posts. For WordPress there are several plug-ins that create the tags for you. I recommend that you do not display the tags on your web site since that gives your reader several opportunities to wander away from your site. Since Technorati gets its content from your RSS feed that's where the tags need to be. A good WordPress plug-in for this is: AutoMeta

If there is a two-word tag such as, 'attention age', one will not have to list all of the permutations. These posts will be listed by Technorati under 'attention age', 'attentionage', 'attention', and 'age', automatically.

Also, any tags that you want to place in your posts will be used by Technorati to place your listing in categories that are similar to yours.

Test Technorati.

You must alert Technorati once you have posted comments on a blog. To do this you have to ping Technorati, unless you are employing a service such as Ping-o-matic which does it for you. If you have to do it yourself, put rpc.technorati.com/rpc/ping among the sites your blogging software contacts. When using WordPress, this is accomplished by entering the information into Options > Writing > Update Services.

Receive Tag and Search Feeds Here

Commenting on other blogs is an excellent way to gain attention, this has already been established, but how does one know that there is an appropriate blog to post on? Start by searching on something that you might have expertise in. A small RSS icon is usually above all search results, this allows you to subscribe to those search results. Adding the website or URL to your favorite RSS reader will notify you anytime a new blog is posted about your topic. One can then quickly jump to that blog and write a comment about it.

Technorati WTF

Technorati has an interesting feature they call WTF where bloggers explain why certain topics are hot right now. This is both a good way to find out what buzz worthy at the moment and a great opportunity for you to become the authority on a hot topic. Just write a good comment on a WTF topic that has no explanation yet and link to your blog.

Enhance Your Status

Technorati rates and ranks a blog based on how many blogs link to your blog. Thus, to be gain a better ranking, the following two important things need to be considered:

1. Several links from the same blog as yours count only as one incoming link. One must be active in several different blogs commenting, posting as a guest, and linking within regular posts.

2. The only qualifying links are those created in the past 180 days. Never lose focus or your ranking will sink.
