Collectibles Primer

by Daniel Wright

There are tons of types of collectibles and one of the most popular things to collect are items related to soft drinks. These can range from items created early in the history of the beverage to relatively recently created promotional cans, bottles, or promotional pieces. There are some who specialize in collecting the machines that these were dispensed from as well.

Bottles are one of the more common collectibles since they aren't space hogs and are available in an array of styles. The prices also come in in a wide array, which is also wonderful. Most desirable of all, and bringing a higher price are bottles that still contain the product.

Some soda product collectibles are specific to one brand, such as Pepsi. Caleb Bradham invented it, he was a druggist in North Carolina. This drink was called "Brad's Drink" in 1893 and changed to the current name after five years. The old bottles are considered valuable, but newer special editions will also bring in a good price. One such bottle is only a couple years old, and is a commemorative bottle to Elvis.

Bottles that represent a change are a valued item for collectors, such as the first no deposit no return bottles and early cans. Changes in shape, label and coloring also mark items of special interest. Some even collect the wooden cases that once held bottles or even some of the cardboard six pack holders with interesting designs.

All kinds of signs make up another genre of collectibles. People collect outdoor signs of metal and wood, indoor signs in all shapes, sizes, and designs, and even murals which require the removal of the entire walls they're painted on. Functional signs such as clocks and lights are very popular. A major factor in the value of wooden signs is condition. Wooden signs that were stored inside and not exposed to all kinds of weather are highly-prized specimens.

There are collectors who specialize in Pepsi vending machines. A wide variety of different machines are on the market ranging from unsophisticated metal boxes which held ice and bottles up to higher tech modern machines. The most prized of the old vending machines are the ones which are still in working condition. These machines can range in price from under $100 for simple machines to thousands for machines that are especially rare.

Collectibles can be anything ranging from China to sweatshirts. Limited edition merchandise is usually made by soft drink companies and is easy to find online at auction sites or collectible specialists. Glasses and trays are the most affordable items to find and popular too. You can find a soda-related item of anything you can think of that would fit anyone's budget.
