How Internet Dating Scams Work

by Jessica A

If you do any kind of chatting or socializing online, you should be aware of some of the internet dating scams out there. The victims of these scams usually end up losing money, but they also suffer emotional damage; they are often left with a broken heart or a bruised ego. These scams are sleazy and awful. What normally happens is that a man or woman will begin talking with someone online. This usually happens at an internet dating site.

The scammer patiently lulls the victim into a false sense of security. They will communicate with each other long enough for the victim to develop strong feelings for the scammer. Internet dating scams usually follow this pattern: Once the scammer has gained the victim's trust, he or she will begin talking about financial troubles. They will usually make up some story about how they or a family member needs an expensive operation, or they might say that they won't be on the internet much longer because they can't afford the bills. Now that the victim cares about the scammer, he or she will often try to save the day.

This, of course, typically involves sending cash. Usually the victim will send the money through a wire transfer system like Western Union. The victim starts out believing they are helping out a friend. But after they send the money, they usually never hear back from their 'friend' again. Sometimes the scammer will send a letter or two of thanks, perhaps, but more often than not the victim won't even see this much. Internet dating scams are a disgusting and terrible to pull on someone, but they are still widespread. So if you're using an internet dating service, be careful. Be wary of any 'friends' who ask for money or drop heavy hints about needing your help. You can avoid becoming a victim: Just don't send money to someone you have never met before.
